Executive Summary
- 1.Bol.com reaches 13 million active customers across the Netherlands and Belgium — the largest marketplace in the Benelux.
- 2.Dutch and Belgian companies register directly; EU companies outside Benelux need an invitation and must meet higher requirements.
- 3.Three fulfillment models exist: FBM (own carrier), VVB (bol label + Ampere dropoff), and LVB (bol warehouse = FBA equivalent).
- 4.The Buy Box is driven by delivery promise, price, and seller rating — LVB and VVB give you the strongest delivery proposition out of the box.
- 5.Use Marktspan's Product Analyzer to scan any Amazon ASIN for bol keyword potential and unit economics before you commit.
2.What is Bol.com?
Bol.com is the largest online shopping platform in the Netherlands and Belgium, owned by Ahold Delhaize — one of Europe's largest retail groups. With over 34 million products and nearly 50,000 third-party partners, it functions as the Benelux equivalent of Amazon.
Unlike Amazon, bol.com operates exclusively in the Netherlands and Belgium, which means less competition from global sellers but also a more focused customer base. The platform is Dutch-language first, so listings, customer service, and return policies all need to meet Dutch-language standards.
Bol's payout model is straightforward: you receive the sale amount minus commission on the 1st and 15th of each month. Commission rates vary by category, typically ranging from 5% to 17%.
3.Who Can Register?
Registration requirements differ significantly depending on where your company is based. Dutch and Belgian companies have the smoothest path — you register directly via partnerplatform.bol.com using your Chamber of Commerce (KvK) or Belgian Business Register (KBO) number and a valid VAT number. The screening process is fast, often completed within days.
EU partners outside the Benelux (Germany, France, Poland, etc.) can only register via invitation. Bol is selective here: it looks for partners with at least €500K annual sales potential on bol, demonstrated international marketplace experience, and the ability to provide customer service in Dutch. You apply via a form, and if bol sees a match, they send a one-time invitation link.
Regardless of location, you will need: a valid trade register number, a VAT number from your country of establishment, a NACE code in e-commerce, an online presence (your website or another marketplace), UBO (ultimate beneficial owner) documentation, a valid ID (passport or EU ID card — no driver's licenses), and an active SEPA bank account in your name or your company's name.
4.Three Fulfillment Models
Bol offers three distinct ways to fulfill orders, each with different trade-offs on delivery promise, cost, and operational complexity.
FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant — own carrier): You store, pack, and ship with your own carrier. You have full control, but the delivery promise is typically slower (2–3 days rather than next day), and your performance depends entirely on your carrier. FBM is suitable when you have unusual product dimensions, high-value fragile goods, or want to start without committing to a fulfillment model.
VVB (Verzenden via bol — bol label): You buy a shipping label from bol and drop packages off at an Ampere inleverpunt. Bol then takes over the last-mile delivery. The key advantage is that many 3PLs are Ampere dropoff partners, meaning your warehouse or 3PL can print the label and hand the parcel directly to Ampere — no need to visit a PostNL or DHL service point yourself. VVB gives a sharper delivery promise (often next day) compared to FBM, and bol absorbs the delivery performance risk.
LVB (Logistiek via bol — bol warehouse): You send your stock to bol's fulfillment centers (Waalwijk and Eindhoven). Bol stores, picks, packs, ships, handles returns, and answers customer service questions about delivery. This is bol's equivalent of Amazon FBA. LVB unlocks the fastest delivery promise (order before 23:59, delivered next day in NL/BE), the Select label, and the highest Buy Box win rate. Rates are all-in (including shipping and returns), starting at €2.75 per item for the smallest sizes.
5.How the Buy Box Works
On bol, the 'Add to cart' button — the Buy Box — is the most important real estate on any product page. When multiple sellers offer the same product (same EAN), bol's algorithm allocates the Buy Box to the best offer.
Delivery promise is the single biggest factor. A seller offering next-day delivery has a dramatically higher chance of winning the Buy Box than one promising delivery in 2–3 days. This is why LVB and VVB are so effective — they give you bol's logistics infrastructure and therefore bol's delivery promise, rather than relying on your own carrier's performance.
Price matters too, but it is not the only variable. Bol also weighs seller rating, returns rate, and cancellation rate. You can sometimes win the Buy Box without having the lowest price if your delivery promise and rating are significantly better than the competition. This is why chasing the floor price is a trap: if you are already at or below the Buy Box price but still not winning, the issue is delivery or rating, not price.
New sellers enter a GrowStart period covering their first 100 orders. During this time, bol evaluates your performance to determine if you can operate at the service level customers expect.
6.Step-by-Step: From Application to First Sale
- Step 1 — Check eligibility: Confirm your products have valid EAN/GTIN or ISBN codes, comply with bol's assortment policy, and that you hold the relevant selling rights for the Benelux.
- Step 2 — Apply or register: NL/BE companies register directly at partnerplatform.bol.com. EU companies outside Benelux apply via the interest form and wait for an invitation.
- Step 3 — Complete screening: Upload your trade register proof, VAT number, UBO documentation, and ID. The background check can take from a few days to several weeks.
- Step 4 — Set up your shop: Once approved, configure your shop profile (name, logo, NL/BE selection), add contact details, and set your return policy.
- Step 5 — Connect your account to Marktspan: Link your bol retailer account in Settings & Health. This enables P&L tracking, ad pilot, keyword research, and repricing.
- Step 6 — Import and analyze your catalog: Use the Product Analyzer to enter your Amazon ASIN (or URL) and get Dutch keyword suggestions, bol category matching, and a profit estimate with LVB fees.
- Step 7 — Choose your fulfillment model: For most new sellers, VVB or LVB gives the best start. LVB is ideal if your product is lightweight and high-turnover. VVB is a good middle ground if you already have a 3PL near an Ampere dropoff point.
- Step 8 — Price competitively, list, and monitor: Set your buy-in price using the profit estimator to ensure margin after bol commission and fulfillment. Monitor your Buy Box share and seller performance score weekly.
Strategic Implications
| # | Implication | Action for sellers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lead with VVB or LVB | Starting with FBM puts you at an immediate delivery disadvantage. Use VVB or LVB from day one to compete for the Buy Box. |
| 2 | Validate with Amazon data before you list | Already on Amazon.de or .co.uk? Paste your ASIN in the Product Analyzer — it maps German/English keywords to Dutch and estimates bol unit economics before you commit stock. |
| 3 | Don't race to the floor on price | The Buy Box algorithm weights delivery and rating heavily. If you're not winning, the fix is usually faster delivery (switch to LVB) or better seller metrics — not a lower price. |
| 4 | Dutch customer service is required | NL and BE customers expect Dutch-language communication. Plan for Dutch templates for confirmations, returns, and support — or use a tool that automates this. |
